"Angel and Voyeurs"
"Angel and Voyeurs"
So, why? Right? Did he just want to paint a picture of a naked woman? Yeah, maybe. I've had lots of fun with most of the women I've seen naked. Some fond, and admittedly weird, memories at times. Women are, in many cases, lovely to look at - curves and what not. But that doesn't explain all the guys in suits, so that's not what this is.
Maybe I'm a misogynist who wants a world when men do the work and women are ogled? Nah, not really. I understand what the word "equal" means, so I don't generally appreciate the American ideal of equality, and that means I think women are generally better in some regards and generally worse in others because men and women are fundamentally different. But that's not what this is either.
Thing is, this painting isn't about that at all. This is a painting depicting how I understand religion in America. Look at the eye-lines of the men in their Sunday best. They ogle this angel. They don't shed their bullshit facade, take shelter under her wings, and gaze into her eyes - the window to the soul don't ya know. They don't care about her wellbeing. They see something tangible that they want. They want to grab it, nuzzle it, impale it, control it, own it. They want it, not her, for what it can give them.
That's what I think the average American want from religion. Give me a quote I can use to say gay people are bad. Give me a quote to say it's ok for me to marry my 12-year-old niece. Give me a quote that makes it ok for me to hate my neighbor, steal from my boss, cheat on my spouse. Give it to me!
I simply don't understand how else to explain a "god-fearing person" who stands for the things that the American religious community stands for. Love your neighbor. Give to the poor. Be faithful. Makes for good merch, but your actions, much like the gaze of the men in this painting, betray your truth as voyeurs, not angels.
